SUMMARY:Structured Literacy Essentials - Flipped Course
DESCRIPTION:Chartwell Teaching Institute (CTI) offers Structured Literacy Essentials\, thoughtfully designed with busy\, working teachers and administrators in mind. This streamlined course delivers focused\, high-impact professional learning while honoring educators’ limited time. The Essentials Flipped course provides a concentrated\, practice-oriented exploration of the essential principles of Structured Literacy. Modules build cohesively from understanding the neuroscience of how the brain learns to read to the foundational components of Structured Literacy and their classroom application.  \nOverview \nThis six-week course meets once weekly and follows a “flipped” structure. Participants complete 1.5–2 hours of assigned self-paced work each week and apply the content in their classrooms before attending a weekly virtual session. \nThe course begins with a three-hour live virtual meeting to establish foundational knowledge. During the five weeks that follow\, participants attend a 90-minute weekly LEAP Lab designed to address questions\, review previously learned content\, and provide guided practice with instructional routines. \nThe LEAP Lab—Learn\, Engage\, Apply\, Practice—offers structured\, synchronous instruction and guided practice once per week. Over the six weeks\, participants develop an overview of the Structured Literacy approach to teaching reading aligned with the Knowledge and Practice Standards (KPS; Cowen\, 2016) and the California Dyslexia Guidelines. \nAudience: School and District administrators\, interventionists\, reading specialistsLength: 11 hours synchronous; 12 hours asynchronousPresenter/s: Chantel Touryan-SchaeferDates: Monday May 11\, May 18\, June 1\, June 8\, June 15\, June 22 (no class Memorial Day)Time: 6:30 – 8:00  pmCost: $350 \nOutcomes \n\nUnderstand the principles of Structured Literacy\nDevelop a skills lesson plan using a Structured Literacy approach\nPractice instructional strategies with guidance and within a classroom setting\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Professional Development Units available for additional purchase through University of the Pacific. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Presenter Chantel Touryan-Schaefer\nChantel Touryan-Schaefer was a first-grade classroom teacher for 14 years before following her passion for reading instruction to become a Reading Specialist.
