SUMMARY:The ABCs of Background Knowledge
DESCRIPTION:Your students come to your classroom with a wide range of lived experiences and prior knowledge. To help them get the most out of complex texts\, you can intentionally support language comprehension by connecting new learning to what they already know. The ABCs of Background Knowledge framework provides a simple approach for activating and assessing students’ prior knowledge\, building their understanding throughout a unit\, and helping them make meaningful connections that foster deep comprehension and critical thinking. \nDuring this one-hour training\, you will explore strategies for activating\, building\, and connecting background knowledge through classroom routines and instructional tools that support students as they learn new content. We’ll also examine cognitive load theory and instructional hierarchy to better understand how students acquire\, strengthen\, and apply knowledge over time. You’ll leave with practical\, classroom-ready strategies that you can implement right away to help all students engage more deeply with texts and content across the curriculum. \nAudience: School and District administrators\, interventionists\, reading specialistsLength: 1 hourPresenter/s: Meghan SanchezDates: August 11\, 2026Time: 4 pmCost: Free \nOutcomes \n\nIdentify the ABCs of background knowledge.\nChoose authentic\, hands-on activities to support background knowledge building throughout a unit of study.\nApply principles of cognitive load theory and instructional hierarchy to sequence instruction. \nExplore visual tools like concept mapping and hexagonal thinking to help students draw connections.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Teacher Bio\nMeghan Sanchez is a Teacher Training Consultant with Chartwell Teaching Institute (CTI)\, specializing in structured literacy\, morphology\, and language comprehension. SUMMARY:Playing POSSUM? Vocabulary and Fluency Strategies for K-2
DESCRIPTION:The POSSUM strategy\, pioneered by Maryann Wolf\, illustrates how Structured Literacy is not just foundational phonics skills. From a young age\, students need direct\, explicit instruction in all areas of the Reading Rope\, and that is exactly what the POSSUM strategy aims to do. It builds background knowledge\, vocabulary\, and fluency from the start\, and when combined with foundational skill instruction\, it creates powerful lessons that improve decoding and language comprehension at the same time. \nIn this workshop\, participants will gain practical examples of how to implement the POSSUM strategy into existing curriculum\, practice sample POSSUM routines using a K-2-friendly graphic organizer\, and plan their own POSSUM lesson using a decodable text. \nAudience: K-2 teachers\, special education teachers\, reading specialists\, instructional coachesLength: 1 hourPresenter/s: Molly BrickerDates: September 10\, 2026Time: 4 pmCost: Free \nOutcomes \n\nIdentify the components of the POSSUM strategy.\nDraw connections between the POSSUM strategy and the Reading Rope.\nPractice using a K-2-friendly POSSUM graphic organizer.\nPlan a POSSUM lesson using a decodable passage.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Teacher Bio\nA former classroom teacher turned literacy advocate\, Molly Bricker is on a mission to bring Structured Literacy to every classroom through her work with the Chartwell Teaching Institute. SUMMARY:Math Sticking Point: Word Problems
DESCRIPTION:Reading comprehension impacts a student’s ability to solve word problems. This is because contextual math tasks combine literacy skills and numerical reasoning. Researchers at St. Mary’s College reported: “…that reading comprehension was a strong predictor of success in mathematical problem solving\, particularly among elementary school pupils.” While math teachers focus on numeracy skills\, it is also vital that they focus on reading comprehension. \nIn this workshop\, teachers will dive deeper into recent research linking strong literacy skills with increased mathematical understanding. Teachers will explore strategies to scaffold learning for MLLs  and students with learning differences. By the end of the workshop\, you will be able to implement instructional moves that build both literacy and numeracy immediately. \nAudience: Math teachers\, instructional coaches\, multiple-subject teachers\, special education teachers\, administrators\, support staff. \nLength: 1 hourPresenter/s: Jesse VickersDates: September 15th 2026Time: 4 pmCost: Free \nOutcomes \n\nRecall the process of solving a word problem from the point of view of the student.\nIdentify the varying parts of language that construct a math word problem (lexical\, polysemous\, academic).\nImplement a scaffold or strategy to support students for each part of language (lexical\, polysemous\, academic) that make up math word problems.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Teacher Bio\nJesse Vickers is a math teacher at Chartwell High School. SUMMARY:Demystifying Dyslexia
DESCRIPTION:October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. This sneak peek into the dyslexic brain will provide participants with essential knowledge related to current definitions of dyslexia\, the neuroscience of reading\, how dyslexia and SLD in reading are diagnosed\, and age-specific characteristics. Participants will have the opportunity to discover the nuances and complexities of dyslexia through discussion protocols and a jigsaw activity. This virtual workshop is designed with classroom teachers and parents in mind. The better we all understand dyslexia\, the better we can support our students from a strengths-based perspective.  \n*Please note this workshop is an abridged version of our 3-day Demystifying Dyslexia course.  \nAudience: Classroom teachers\, special education teachers\, reading specialists\, instructional coaches\, administrators\, and parentsLength: 1 hourPresenter/s: Molly BrickerDates: October 13\, 2026Time: 4 pmCost: Free \nOutcomes \n\nUnderstand the reading brain and what dyslexia is and is not.\nLearn about neuropsychological assessments and how dyslexia is diagnosed.\nExplore how dyslexia feels for the reader and take a closer look at characteristics by age group. \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Teacher Bio\nA former classroom teacher turned literacy advocate\, Molly Bricker is on a mission to bring Structured Literacy to every classroom through her work with the Chartwell Teaching Institute.
