OneBrainScience specifically uses the California ELA/ELD Framework, California Dyslexia Guidelines, California’s QPLS, and the DIER model of reading (Kim, 2023) to guide our deeply thoughtful and collaborative coursework.

Bridging Languages: Supporting Crosslinguistic Transference in Spanish-English Bilinguals

In this workshop, participants will learn how to support crosslinguistic transference by explicitly connecting Spanish and English language structures in literacy instruction. Grounded in Structured Literacy principles, this session will unpack how phonological awareness, morphology, vocabulary, and background knowledge transfer across languages. Participants will explore practical strategies such as leveraging cognates, activating background knowledge, and using explicit and systematic instruction to strengthen both languages. The workshop will also highlight how Spanish’s transparent orthography and rich morphology can support English literacy development. Educators will engage in hands-on activities and collaborative discussions to apply these strategies in real classroom contexts.

45-Hour Comprehensive Structured Literacy

OneBrainScience offers a 45-Hour Comprehensive Structured Literacy Course with optional ongoing coaching. Participants in the course learn a Structured Literacy approach to teaching reading that aligns with the Knowledge and Practice Standards, the CA Dyslexia Guidelines, and the CA ELA/ELD Framework. Each module intentionally builds on previously learned material and research-based practices. Modules progress from understanding the neuroscience behind how the brain reads to the founding principles of Structured Literacy, to specific instructional practices in phonological awareness, phonics, reading fluency, vocabulary, morphology, language and reading comprehension, writing, and assessment. Ample time is allotted for discussion, practice, planning, and reflection.

Participants will learn a structured literacy approach to teaching reading, aligned to the Knowledge and Practice Standards (KPS; Cowen, 2016). IDA defines KPS as “the knowledge and skills that all teachers of reading should possess to teach all students to read proficiently.” Structured Literacy is explicit, systematic teaching that focuses on phonological awareness, word recognition, phonics and decoding, spelling, and syntax at the sentence and paragraph levels, and includes morphology, vocabulary, and fluency development.

This course is also designed to deepen educators’ knowledge of and ability to apply evidence-based strategies to improve reading comprehension. Participants will learn strategies to build students’ background knowledge, explicitly teach vocabulary with morphological analysis, emphasizing Latin and Greek roots, and analyze texts through close reads and text annotation to improve all students’ language development and comprehension. The course also provides ample opportunities to practice and deliver lessons that involve evidence-based scaffolded reading practices and instructional routines across major genres and text structures: informational, narrative, and argumentative texts.

20-Hour Structured Literacy Essentials

OneBrainScience offers Structured Literacy Essentials: A 20-Hour Intensive, thoughtfully designed with busy, working teachers and administrators in mind. This streamlined course delivers focused, high-impact professional learning while honoring educators’ limited time. Participants learn a Structured Literacy approach to teaching reading that aligns with the Knowledge and Practice Standards (KPS; Cowen, 2016), the California Dyslexia Guidelines, and the California ELA/ELD Framework.

This 20-hour Essentials course provides a concentrated, practice-oriented exploration of the essential principles of Structured Literacy. Modules build cohesively from understanding the neuroscience of how the brain learns to read to the foundational components of Structured Literacy and their classroom application. Participants engage with evidence-based instructional practices in phonological awareness, phonics and decoding, reading fluency, vocabulary, morphology, language comprehension, writing, and assessment. Time is intentionally embedded for application, lesson planning, and professional reflection to ensure immediate classroom relevance.

To ensure depth without adding seat time, the course includes curated at-home read, watch, and listen opportunities that allow participants to extend and deepen their understanding of the research base and instructional practices. These flexible learning extensions include selected articles, recorded lectures, classroom demonstrations, and expert commentary, enabling educators to engage with the material at their own pace while strengthening conceptual understanding and implementation.

Participants will deepen their understanding of Structured Literacy as defined by the International Dyslexia Association’s Knowledge and Practice Standards—“the knowledge and skills that all teachers of reading should possess to teach all students to read proficiently.”
