NPR published an article in February 2024 about the lack of research-based methodology that’s used in teacher training programs across the country. Close to 700 teacher training programs were surveyed and they found that roughly 25% of teachers who leave those programs are teaching students how to read in a way that’s aligned with science and research.
Strategies like “three-cueing” are becoming more and more popular in teacher training programs despite not being a research-backed method to successfully teach reading. NPR goes on to advocate for programs that teach the Science of Reading. Ahmad writes, “There is growing evidence that the science of reading is a more effective way to teach students how to read. More effective than, say, “three-cueing,” which is when students rely on context and sentence structure to identify words they don’t know.”
