Structured Literacy: Focus Middle School

This two-day course will build on the Introduction to Structured Literacy course with a focus on students and teachers in the middle school grades. Participants will deepen their understanding of advanced word analysis, including strategies for decoding multisyllabic words and teaching morphology at both the Anglo-Saxon and Latin levels. The course will also explore research-aligned reading comprehension strategies, scaffolded approaches to strengthen reading fluency, and hands-on practice administering and interpreting a Qualitative Reading Inventory (QRI) to assess students’ reading performance and inform instruction.

Outcomes

  • Participants will learn a structured literacy approach to teaching reading, aligned to the Knowledge and Practice Standards (KPS; Cowen, 2016).
  • Participants will gain a deeper understanding of grade-specific morphological knowledge
  • Participants will gain a deeper understanding of grade-specific syllable knowledge
  • Participants will practice implementing a Qualitative Reading Inventory to assess students’ reading performance
  • Participants will participate in engaging decoding, morphology, and fluency and activities that can be easily implemented in their own classrooms

Teacher Bio

Meghan Sanchez is a Teacher Training Consultant with Chartwell Teaching Institute (CTI). Meghan brings 10+ years of experience to the classroom and prior to this role, was a homeroom teacher at Chartwell. Meghan served as the director of academic support and as academic dean at Lake Tahoe Preparatory School. Meghan has taught students of all ages, ranging from PreK-4 to high school, and has also supported new educators as a graduate assistant with Johns Hopkins University School of Education. Meghan lives in Truckee, CA, with her wife, Kayla, and dog, Reagan.
